The 3 Major Credit Bureaus
There are three major repositories of credit and background information in the U.S. - Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. These credit bureaus are responsible for collecting and maintaining consumer credit reports. These reports are then provided to subscribers, such as landlords, mortgage lenders, credit card companies and others who are deciding whether or not to extend you credit.
When someone obtains credit, the creditor ie. banks, loan company etc. reports the payment history to these repositories. This is usually done monthly but may be done on an irregular basis. These repositories simply accept the information as it comes in electronically.

Reporting Accurate Negative Information
When negative information in your report is accurate, only the passage of time can assure its removal. A consumer reporting company can report most accurate negative information for seven years and bankruptcy information for 10 years. Information about an unpaid judgment against you can be reported for seven years or until the statute of limitations runs out, whichever is longer.
